Consumables are the part of a peptide workflow that is easy to overlook until a vial is already on the bench. A lyophilised peptide cannot be assessed in vitro until it has been brought into solution, so the diluent, the syringe that transfers it and the pad that cleans the stopper belong to the same routine as the compound itself. Bacteriostatic water is not simply sterile water. Bacteriostatic Water 0.9% comes as a 10 ml vial and contains 0.9 per cent benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic agent, whereas plain sterile water carries no preservative at all, which is why the preserved version is the usual default diluent. Phosphate buffered saline and acetic acid water 0.6% are listed as alternatives, the latter for compounds that call for acidic conditions, and the reconstitution guide sets out the general method.
